Education (Master of Education, M.Ed.)

The Master of Education (M.Ed) program is intended for current and future educators, school administrators, current and future policymakers, and other related service providers. The M.Ed program is designed to meet the needs of professionals who are seeking to learn techniques to more effectively differentiate instruction, who wish to enhance their understanding of the unique needs of diverse learners, and who are interested in improving instructional practices in their school or district. The M.Ed. program consists of 30 credit hours. Students complete 21 credit hours within one one concentration of their choosing: Differentiated Curriculum and Instruction, K-12 Cross-Categorical Special Education, or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Students complete 9 credit hours of core courses, through which they participate in an applied Capstone Internship Experience. 

Admission to the graduate program in Education requires meeting all qualifications for acceptance to the Missouri Western State University Graduate School.

  • Submission of application for admission to the MWSU Graduate Program.
  • Completion of an undergraduate degree in education, or a closely related discipline, from an accredited undergraduate institution.
  • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75.
  • Statement of Purpose: A one-page narrative, which describes his/her purpose for seeking admission to a graduate program, as well as what he/she hopes to gain from the experience.
  • The GRE is not required.

Note: TSL 665 Practicum in ELL: Elementary and TSL 667 Practicum in ELL: Secondary require prerequisites of EDU 311 Secondary Reading Techniques, EDU 315 Psychology and Education of the Exceptional Child, and EDU 430 Teaching Students with Reading Deficits or EDU 521 Teaching Students with Reading Deficits.

Program Graduation Requirements 

  1. Earn a minimum overall GPA of 3.0, with no more than 6 credit hours of C in all required coursework.
  2. Official approval of required Master Educator Experience.

University Graduation Requirements

  1. Satisfactorily complete all required coursework in the program;
  2. Earn a minimum of 30 credit hours;
